What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by abnormal shifts in mood and energy levels. Unlike typical mood swings, individuals with bipolar disorder experience more intense emotions, which can significantly impact their ability to carry out daily tasks and maintain self-care routines. Formerly known as manic depression, this lifelong condition can affect individuals of any age, although it is often diagnosed in young adults. At Serenity Mental Health Centers, our dedicated team in Provo, UT is here to offer support to those grappling with the aftermath of manic or depressive episodes. We are committed to helping our patients achieve balance by providing various treatment options tailored to their specific needs.
How Is Bipolar Disorder Treated?
Understanding that addressing bipolar disorder requires a personalized approach, our team of professionals recognizes the journey involved in finding the right treatment. While traditional medications like mood stabilizers and antidepressants are commonly prescribed, psychotherapy also proves to be effective for many patients. However, some individuals may experience intolerable side effects from these treatments. To cater to diverse needs, we offer alternative therapies such as ketamine IV therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy. By providing a range of treatment options, we empower each patient to explore what works best for them, ultimately helping them achieve stability and fulfillment in their lives.

Bipolar Disorder Reviews
I highly recommend Tanner as a psychiatrist and honestly the serenity staff as a whole. Tanner helped me find the right medications that worked well together and helped me out tremendously with my depression and anxiety. He’s very knowledgeable and listened to me and my needs. I highly recommend him.
I’ve had a great experience with Serenity health! They’re a very caring team that makes sure you feel cared for. I did TMS with them and they’ve been very flexible and understanding with my treatment. I haven’t felt pressured at all or had issues with payment.
I love Jenn! She genuinely cares and connected with me right away. She takes the time to explain mental health options and decide on an individualized treatment plan. I'm not sure what the other reviews are complaining about. The front desk always answers quickly and has a professional warm staff, I haven't been pressured into TMS, meds have been sent to the pharmacy same day, and the no show policy is comparable to other offices. Serenity has been great for me!
I've never been to a psychiatrist who cares so much. The first time I called to schedule an appointment, they expressed empathy for my mental health struggles. I've never experienced that at any other psychiatric clinic.
Going to Serenity Mental Health has changed my life. After the ketamine treatments, and adjustments to my medication. As my wife said welcome back it's been about 10 years. I think all the staff were excellent. Thanks to Jenn my Provider and McKenzie, I think her name was, she was the nurse that did my ketamine. I now have my life back. I can't remember the last time I was this happy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is bipolar disorder genetic?
Bipolar disorder often has hereditary links and is frequently found in family lines, raising vulnerability among those with genetic connections. Although genetic factors are impactful, inheriting a predisposition does not automatically lead to the development of the condition.
What initial symptoms can indicate bipolar disorder?
The onset of bipolar disorder is typically marked by pronounced emotional shifts and behavioral deviations, which might include:
- Severe fluctuations between emotional highs and lows
- Alterations in sleeping habits
- A rise in impulsiveness or irritability
- Major shifts in energy levels
- Behaviors that are out of character
How do bipolar disorder and depression differ?
Bipolar disorder and depression share some symptoms but are fundamentally different conditions. Depression is characterized by enduring sadness, despair, and disinterest in activities. Bipolar disorder, however, not only involves these depressive symptoms but also includes severe mood swings from depression to episodes of mania or hypomania. These manic phases are characterized by heightened moods, increased activity, and sometimes reckless behavior, distinguishing it from the uniform low mood seen in depression.
Is bipolar disorder the same as having mood swings?
No, bipolar disorder is much more severe than everyday mood swings. It involves extreme mood episodes that last for extended periods and can disrupt daily life. These episodes often require professional treatment and ongoing management.
What types of bipolar disorder are there?
Bipolar disorder includes several classifications. Bipolar I involves full manic episodes, while Bipolar II is characterized by less severe hypomanic episodes and major depressive episodes. Cyclothymic disorder features frequent mood fluctuations that are milder but still impact daily functioning.
Is bipolar disorder genetic?
While bipolar disorder is not directly inherited, a family history of the condition can increase the likelihood of developing it. Both genetic predisposition and environmental factors play significant roles in its onset, making family history an important consideration during diagnosis and treatment.
